ARTIFICIAL

The Magazine of Imaginary Artists
About

Note from the Editors

This is a magazine of nonexistent artists. They are proxies for artistic ideas we’ve only dreamed of exploring—distinct creative personalities that represent different facets of our own minds. We're not sure what to call these spirits, although “heteronym” might come closest.

To step out of our heads, these ghosts require a veneer of digital reality. We found that artificial intelligence, trained to produce pure verisimilitude, was the ideal tool for the job. And a high-fashion art magazine is the natural habitat for any creature of tenuous authenticity.

The process of creating each issue of the magazine is not engineering, but more of a séance. We engage the machine in long conversations, with the AI acting as medium to conjure these figures from the realm of our thoughts.

Will we ever mix scents like Ayumi Morita? Highly doubtful—although we still dream of creating fountains like Silvio Braga. But we present these heteronyms to you now, in the hope that you might enjoy their work, and perhaps be inspired to give breath to the unheard voices within your own mind.
